From 2025, Fees Free covers the final year of study or training for the first qualification an eligible learner completes. If you’re eligible, Fees Free covers the fees for the final year of tertiary study or training in the first provider-based qualification or work-based programme completed after 1st January 2025, up to $12,000 including GST.
For more information, visit the Fees Free Website.
Fees Free is a fund for first-time tertiary learners. It covers fees for one year's study or two years’ work-based training – up to $12,000. It’s paid directly to your tertiary education organisation: a university, Te Pūkenga, a private training establishment or a wānanga. There are no age requirements or age restrictions for the government fees free study.
You must meet certain criteria, and your course or programme must also be eligible. To determine whether you are eligible for Fees Fee use the Fees Free Eligibility Test.
The Public Trust Fee Protect scheme safeguards the money paid by you to your education provider (Fruition Horticulture), so that if they are unable to complete delivery of the course due to closure, insolvency, or other issues you can receive a full or partial refund of your fees. Your fees are kept safe under the care of Public Trust and are protected by a government guarantee. Public Trust have been helping Kiwis to safeguard their assets for over 150 years, and they are the company of choice for fee protection at most New Zealand training institutions. Public Trust does not charge students for fees protected with Public Trust. Fees are agreed between Public Trust and your training provider (Fruition Horticulture) and deducted from their interest payments.
Visit Fee Protection for Students – Public Trust for more information.
